High School The Vegas Way
Even after living here 21 years, I am still amazing at the Vegas Way.
Did you fly into or out of McCarran International Airport Thursday? The airport airwaves were thumping with live electronic dance music to welcome our visitors to the Electric Daisy Festival, the largest music festival in North America. Some travelers put on their dancin' shoes to the get down music.
But it wasn't Calvin Harris doing the music mixing. The three DJs were actually high school students who are part of an after-school program at Enterprise Library. Today, some of the highest-paid entertainers are DJs. Wouldn't you want your kid to grow up to be Afrojack?
The DJ program is the first of its kind in America. School districts in LA and San Francisco want to replicate it.
Want to raise money for the band? I happened to be at the Fremont Street Experience one Friday night this fall. A local high school drum corps--in uniform-- was performing, trying to raise money for a school trip to a music competition. A huge crowd had gathered as they banged out their thumping rhythms. Judging by the $10 bills in the hat, they were on their way.
You can learn how to read, write and do 'rithmetic everywhere. In Vegas you can learn how to be a JD, too.
